Practise Print Project

Before I started my main advanced portfolio project I decided to have a practise run on a print task based on British Youth. I had not previously used any programs that may be used during print such as Photoshop and InDesign mainly because I had previously done a website task and therefore used Dreamweaver. I found it difficult to use Photoshop initially and I found InDesign to be an easier user experience. As I found it difficult to use I believe that me getting used to Photoshop caused the quality of my project to drop, due to this I would give myself a level 2 or a low level 3 in the evaluation section.

Level 2 Print Task:
There is evidence of basic ability in the creative use of some of the following technical skills:

  • Awareness of conventions of layout and page design
  • Awareness of the need for variety in fonts and text size
  • Accurate use of language and register
  • The appropriate use of ICT for the task set
  • Appropriate integration of illustration and text
  • Framing a shot, using a variety of shot distances as appropriate
  • Shooting material appropriate to the task set; selecting mise-en scene including colour, figure, lighting, objects and setting
  • Manipulating photographs as appropriate, including cropping and resizing.
I gave this because from my own personal view I believe I did the requirements it stated, such as: Fonts/Text (Used multiple fonts), Use of IT (Used Photoshop & InDesign), Shot distances (Image of London) and Manipulating photographs (Added filter onto London photo to give a neon effect).

The good points of my work as told by my teacher and other students were the following:
  • Good use of font - I decided to use www.dafont.com  in order to get some more unique fonts instead of the generic pre-installed fonts.
  • Good use of Image manipulation - People thought my photos which were edited were good with the neon and graffiti filters on Photoshop.
The bad points which people found were:
  • Continuity - The continuity errors cause the two pages to seem like they're from two different magazines. This was most likely due to one of them being created in Photoshop and one in InDesign.
  • Text on the Contents Page - Some people found it difficult to read which I agree with too. This is because I was just getting used to InDesign and therefore didn't know how to use it effectively.
From these points given I now know where my areas of improvement are and what I need to work on for my final project if I decide to do the print task.
